Who Are Dermal Fillers For?

Dermal fillers are among the most sought after cosmetic treatments today. There are tons of cosmetic medical centers that offer injections as part of their service menu and thousands of patients are treated daily with the miraculous compound. You’ve heard of dermal filler injections, maybe even specific brands like Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra and many others.

But you can’t decide whether or not fillers are the right procedure for you. It’s hard to move forward with any particular treatment, when you’re not familiar with it. Who knows: you might not even need it at all. Which is why many cosmetic centers put a considerable effort into educating their patients about the benefits of dermal fillers and what they are meant to improve.

Thanks to the doctors at Manhattan’s Skinly Aesthetics, who were kind enough to provide us with insider information on filler-based cosmetic practices, we now have a more precise idea of who needs filler and why. Hopefully after reading this, you’ll have an easier time making your decision.

Who Needs Dermal Fillers?

Before you decide whether or not you should get filler, or if you are a good candidate for it, you must first understand what the procedure does and what it treats. Old skin is saggy; we all know that. Over the years, through all the wear and tear that our bodies go through, skin takes a lot of damage. And even if you don’t get a single cut or bruise your entire life, it still naturally gets loose and droopy.

This sagginess isn’t noticeable at first but after you start to see the little bags forming under your eyes, wrinkles on the forehead and those little jowls hanging below the chin, you begin to understand what cosmetic practitioners refer to as “volume”.

The hallmark of almost all dermal fillers is volume restoration, which allows the skin to once again wrap tightly around the face. This brings back the many contours and roundness that you see in younger faces and restores previously lost character and vibrancy. Fillers take an otherwise tired looking appearance and give it a restored sense of youthfulness and vigour. If you’ve looked in the mirror and thought that your face doesn’t match the energy you have, then dermal filler is the treatment you should try.

Keep in mind, that there are many people out there who don’t mind a little bit of saginness and wrinkles when they look in the mirror. This is a perfectly healthy mentality to have. But if you’ve at any point been bothered by wrinkles or the general looseness of your face, then dermal filler can be used to lift up your skin in all the right places.

The compound is a specialized gel which expands when injected and lifts up the skin, tightening it around all the key areas of your facial bone structure, to give it that youthful appearance. An easy way to tell the difference between a face with high and low volume is to look for full and rounded features that a youthful volumized face would have.

For example, a young face has a clear V shape, which starts from either cheekbone, goes down along the jawline and converges on the chin below. If you look at an older face with less volume, this V shape is reversed, since the cheeks are flat and not as accentuated, nor are the jawlines.

Besides restoring volume, dermal fillers are also very useful for those who have very overpowering wrinkles and other age marks on their face. Wrinkles can be quite attractive, but not if the creases are too deep and bold.

When fillers lift up the skin, they also smooth out and tighten it, causing the wrinkles to disappear. Depending on which area of the face you want to treat, different variants of the compound may be utilized. So, you’ll need to think about which areas of the face you want to treat before making an appointment.

Who Isn’t a Candidate for Dermal Fillers

The compound used in most dermal filler procedures is an injectable hyaluronic acid, which can be naturally found in the body. This has several advantages.

First and most importantly, this lowers the chance of allergic reactions. The substance is found in your body as well, so when injected, it won’t result in allergic reactions. Keep in mind, however, this doesn’t mean the compound is safe for everyone. You should speak to your dermatologist before scheduling an appointment. While dermal fillers are generally quite safe, this doesn’t mean they’re safe for absolutely everyone.

Second, this also means that the recovery or downtime following the procedure is also quite short. Many invasive surgical cosmetic treatments require several weeks and sometimes up to a month of inactivity for the results to settle. Dermal fillers will take a few days at most. Which is considerably shorter than many of its counterparts.

As safe as the treatment may be, there are still some precautions you’ll need to take care of before scheduling an appointment. As previously mentioned, dermal filler injections are not dangerous, but you may not be a candidate for them.

This requires a quick consultation with your doctor beforehand. Also, individuals who are pregnant are advised not to go for dermal fillers, as are those who’ve recently received a different cosmetic treatment, like Botox. Patients who are taking some medications or are dealing with a skin condition are also not candidates of dermal fillers.

Most patients have absolutely no problems with the procedure. But just to be on the safe side, make sure that you received a clearance before going to a clinic.

Having a face that you’re proud to see in the mirror is food for the soul, for sure. But it doesn’t mean you should take risks with your health to achieve this. Consult with your healthcare specialist, get their approval and then you’re free to lift and tighten skin all you want.
