My name is Karen, and I’m a Blog Abandoner.
I didn’t mean to! But, sure, that’s what we all say, isn’t it? We didn’t mean to disappear. We didn’t mean any of it. And, really, we could come back any time, right??
Well, what started as a busy week turned into a busy month and then it just became a really busy LIFE.
And I’m not even the least bit sorry about it.
Although, I was a little shocked when I realized that the last entry I wrote was about meeting Christian Bale back in December and somehow it’s February already and how did that even happen?
Here’s a little glimpse of what I’ve been doing since I’ve been gone:
My mom and I went to this event for Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who wrote the original music for “The Greatest Showman” (and also “La La Land”). This guy crashed the event, and then insisted on a picture.*
*I might be slightly exaggerating. But still. This happened.
We had Christmas and New Years and they were a lot of fun.
There were some big changes at my day job, so my Christmas break got cut short because I had some unexpected preparations for the semester since I’m actually in charge of everything now. Which is great and I love it and it’s what was supposed to happen years ago, but it just means a lot of additional busy.
ONE day before I found out my co-worker was leaving for other opportunities, I learned I was approved for press credentials to go to the Sundance Film Festival!
Now, I’ve been to Sundance before. When I lived in Utah, I went to films up there several times and stalked celebrities outside the gifting suite and all that. But this time, I had an actual PRESS BADGE and got to go to the movies without paying for them.
Except that with the changes at work, my trip to Sundance became complicated.
We worked it out and I still got to go, but I ended up only being there for three days instead of the week I had originally plotted.
But, it was still a darned good week. Behold:
(Or, as I like to call her, the BETTER Gyllenhaal!)
–is in a movie called “The Kindergarten Teacher” where she plays a teacher that gets a little too involved in the life of one of her students. See that tiny cutie on the left, staring up at her? He’s freaking adorable, the movie is good, and yeah. That’s Maggie Gyllenhaal right there. I didn’t get to meet her because they rushed everyone out right away. But that’s totally okay.
Another movie I caught was “Lizzie,” which stars Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart and is about the 1892 murders of Lizzie Borden’s parents. And Denis O’Hare and Jeff Perry are also in it and this happened:
And I got to tell Denis O’Hare that he’s always the best part of “American Horror Story.”
(Second when Jessica Lange is there, but I didn’t need to tell him that…)
Ethan Hawke was at Sundance with THREE movies, apparently. One of which, he directed. It’s called “BLAZE” and it’s about Outlaw Country singer/songwriter Blaze Foley. I absolutely loved it. My favorite of the seven movies I saw.
Not pictured: Me, afterward, meeting Ethan Hawke, and showing him my audience ballot in which I gave it the full four stars.
The next movie I saw was in the same venue, so they were hurrying us out of the Ethan Hawke movie, which is why I didn’t get a chance to get a picture with him.
I ran outside to meet up with a PR rep that had a ticket for me for the next film. It’s called “Burden” and it’s a true story about a guy who was raised in the KKK, but gave it all up for love. It’s a FANTASTIC film and Garrett Hedlund is in it and he’s amazing.
Anyway, I ran back inside to snag a seat toward the front. There was a big time critic from another outlet sitting on the end of the row, so I left an empty seat between us and tossed my coat on a chair. I ran out to the restroom, and when I came back, some random guy had taken the empty seat between us.
Why, yes. Yes, that IS Dominic West from “The Wire” and “The Affair” and “The Square” and “28 Days.”
He actually intended to go to a different movie, but ended up at the wrong venue. He wasn’t in the movie. It turned out he was in town for one that screened earlier in the day and just wanted to check out some other offerings. And we just sat and talked for like 15 minutes before ours started.
Life is weird sometimes.
So now I’m in the weird in between where it’s totally Oscar time and holy crap I can’t believe they’re just a month away. And also, it’s 2018, so we have all new movies to see.
Plus the Olympics are starting and stuff is just happening everywhere and it’s great.
Busy. But great.
I’m having a blast.
