I switched hours with a co-worker the other day because of a fun thing I got to do in the morning. Which meant I would be at work until we closed at 8 PM. Because I was just going to have to turn around and be here at 7 AM the next morning, I spent the night at my mom’s house, which is half the distance as my house.
I had some work to do. A new project I’m really excited to tell you all about. But it required some work that needed to get done that night. It’s tricky and I’m still learning how to do it, so it took me longer than it would take, say, an expert. Or even someone who is moderately competent at this type of project.
Anyway, it took until somewhere around 1 AM to finish. And it’s not even THAT good. Just…sufficient. But I was working on it until 1 AM. My mom had already gone to bed. I had to be up in 5 hours. I’d already been up for some 20 hours by that point. I was so exhausted.
So I went and brushed my teeth and climbed into bed.
A dog in the neighborhood started barking.
It sounded exactly like Laura’s dog, Lady. So I almost yelled, “Lady! Shush!” But then I remembered I wasn’t home so it couldn’t possibly be Lady.
Eventually, I drifted to sleep. It was probably somewhere around 1:30, at this point.
And then I was JERKED AWAKE by a strange sound.
I lay there in the dark, trying to determine if it was real or imagined.
There was silence.
And then it started again. Some sort of rustling, maybe.
I turned on the bedside lamp.
The noise stopped.
And then it started again.
It sounded like it was coming from under the bed. But then it kind of sounded like it was coming from my bag, which was a couple of feet away.
This went on for a bit. Nothing was visibly moving, but I could hear something that sounded like chewing.
I posted this on Twitter:

Finally, enough was enough. After determining the chewing sounds were most likely a mouse chewing the cardboard boxes under the bed, I moved my purse, backpack, and laptop bag off the floor, onto the bed, and went to sleep on the couch.
I was just starting to drift back to sleep when my mom’s bedroom door opened and footsteps padded down the hall.
My mom sometimes can’t sleep and gets up in the middle of the night to watch TV. I didn’t want to scare her, so I figured I should mention I was there.
Me: (Whispering) Hey, Mom.
Mom: Oh! What are you still doing up??
Me: I’m sleeping here. There’s a monster under my bed.
Me: Okay, not a monster. But probably a mouse. Sorry.
Mom: Oh no…
Me: Yeah…so…have fun with that.
Mom: You need to get some sleep.
Me: You’re keeping me awake now.
She went back to bed and I finally drifted off to sleep for the remaining three hours or so before my alarm would be going off. Which it did soon after.
I went back into the guest room, careful not to let anything scurry out into the hallway. As soon as I turned on the light, I immediately saw something was wrong.
On the edge of the bed was a corner of an M&M fun size wrapper. And a mouse dropping. And bits of fabric.
All of a sudden, it hit me.
A few days earlier, I had a fun size pack of M&Ms, but didn’t have anywhere to throw the trash. So I shoved it in the front pocket of my purse and forgot about it.
Well, some critter discovered what was surely a disappointment, since the package was empty.
But this not cheap Vera Bradley bag suffered the consequences.
I have no idea where that mouse is. It doesn’t seem to be in any of my bags, and there was evidence that it did escape the bed.
I’m so irritated.
And also very sleepy.
