It’s Harry Potter’s birthday, y’all!
My original post for today was going to be an essay on why people give Snape too much credit for being a good guy.
But then I thought about it and remembered that it’s also JK Rowling’s birthday and I love her and I thought I shouldn’t use her birthday to talk about how she’s totally wrong about one of her own favorite characters.
So, instead, here’s just a random, fun, silly Harry Potter Questionnaire that I found on this site. Feel free to steal it, since it’s not mine anyway.
1. If you went to Hogwarts, which house would you be sorted into?
Ravenclaw, according to Pottermore.
2. Have you ever been to a HP midnight release?
Yup. I assume this means the books and the only midnight release party I went to was for “Deathly Hallows.” But I went to the midnight releases of most of the movies.
3. What did you think of the “Deathly Hallows?”
As a matter of fact, I just finished reading it again and I love it more every time. It’s pretty close to perfect.
4. How many times have you re-read the books?
Not totally sure. At least three.
5. Whose death was the saddest?
Maybe this will sound weird, but…Hedwig. And also Dobby. Basically, the characters who were heroes, but didn’t get a chance to go out fighting. Does that make sense?
6. If you went to Hogwarts would you rather have a cat, an owl, or a rat?
An owl, totally. They’re the most useful, and they stay in the owlery so you don’t have to clean up after them or feed them either.
7. What do you think of the movie “Half-Blood Prince?”
There were things about it I totally loved, and things that could have been better. Like all the movies, I wish they had stuck more tightly to the emotions of the book.
8. What do you think of the “Deathly Hallows” being split in two?
It was the best way to do it if they wanted it to come out in theaters. Although I think these books would be a perfect TV series. Each book could easily be one entire season.
9. Have you read the “Tales of Beedle the Bard?”
Yup. My friends Katie and David gave me a copy for Christmas one year.
10. When did you first become a Potter fan?
Summer of 2001. My roommate Aime giggled through the first book and insisted that I read it as soon as she was done. She promised that it was fairly stand alone and that if I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t feel obligated to keep going. I read the first chapter, closed her battered copy and handed it back to her. She asked if I didn’t like it. I said I was going to go buy my own set in hard cover. And I did. All four books. Which I read over the course of the next month and loved them.
Hermione Granger. Duh.
Favorite male character that isn’t Harry? Ron Weasley. I love Ron. He’s so sweet and loyal and funny.
Uh…None of them? Or…I guess Snape maybe?
Hippogriffs are super cool.
Accio. I mean, how handy would that be? Accio, remote! Or, Accio, phone! Ooh! Accio, lunch!
Although it’s technically a summoning charm and not a spell…Hmmm…
I mean, there are a lot of great ones, but this one always makes me happy in “Order of the Phoenix:”
“You’re a prefect? Oh Ronnie! That’s everyone in the family!”
“What are Fred and I? Next door neighbors?
Books or Movies?
“Prisoner of Azkaban”
“Deathly Hallows Part 2”
Gotta go with House Pride and say Ravenclaw!
My favorite Weasley? How about my favorite Weasley that isn’t Ron? I’m going with Mr. Weasley. No, Mrs. Weasley. Wait, no, Fred. Or…George…Uh…I don’t know, this is impossible!
Mr. and Mrs. Weasley. I adore them.
Gryffindor or Slytherin?
Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff?
House Pride! Ravenclaw forever!
Fred or George?
Ginny or Luna?
I love them both for different reasons. But if we’re going with the movie versions, Luna gets the win because they really ruined Ginny’s character by reducing it to practically nothing.
Butterbeer or Firewhiskey?
Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade?
Diagon Alley! I want to go to there!
Half Blood Prince or Deathly Hallows?
Sorcerer’s Stone or Chamber of Secrets?
Ooh. I like them both for different reasons, but I guess I’ll go with “Sorcerer’s Stone” because it was when Harry got his first taste of freedom from the Dursleys.
Snape or Slughorn:
As a teacher? Slughorn. As a person…um…I guess Snape? No, I just can’t go along with that. But he did redeem himself and Slughorn was always just an opportunistic wimp. Um…I guess as a person I’d say Snape. But Slughorn is DEFINITELY a better teacher.
Lupin or Sirius?
Actually…I’m going with Lupin on this one.
Harry/Ginny or Harry/Hermione?
Harry/Ginny in the books. I don’t care what sort of remorse Rowling has about it now, I love the two of them together and the fact that it means he and Ron and Hermione all get to be related in the end and their kids are all cousins.
Lavender Brown or Parvati Patil?
Parvati Patil. We don’t know much about her, but that’s probably because she’s not a clingy whiner.
Seamus Finnigan or Dean Thomas?
Dean Thomas. Seamus was cool when he wasn’t being kind of a git.
Kreacher or Dobby?
Muggleborn or Pureblood?
Bellatrix or Narcissa?
Narcissa. Although Bellatrix was kind of fun to hate.
Voldemort or Tom Riddle?
This will sound weird, but I’m going with Voldemort. Yeah, he was fully evil and irredeemable, but Riddle had zero reason to be the way he was. He was a whiny prat with plenty of opportunities to do the right thing and he didn’t take them.
Hedwig or Crookshanks?
Aw, I love Hedwig. I love that she actually had a personality, and that she was loyal to the end. Whatever even happened to Crookshanks? I just realized we have no idea.
