I don’t have a lot of fond memories of high school, honestly. I mean, I had great times in those days, sure. But most of my good memories are of things that happened outside of school. And with friends that went to other schools. My lunch group was different every year. I wasn’t super active in any clubs and the Lord knows I got sidetracked trying to pick out a candy bar the day they gave out athletic abilities.
But there was high school. And I went to it. Somewhere I have the diploma to prove it. So when this meme started making the rounds on Facebook the other day, I decided to go ahead and do it. And then I decided some of these answers needed a little more space for fleshing out the details.
(My Facebook answers are in red. Explanations are below.)
1. The year? 1994
I was in the first freshman class. We were “1994, the First to Go ALL 4.” It’s clever because they rhymed 4 with 4…
2. Own a Letterman’s jacket? Nope
There was no point in buying one if I wasn’t going to letter in anything.
3. What kind of car did u drive? Mom’s minivan when she didn’t need it.
Here’s the scoop. I didn’t get my license until I was 17 because I wasn’t going to have a car anyway, so what was the point? But I was also a year ahead in school (skipped kindergarten), so I turned 17 my senior year. By then, my mom was more than happy to let me take the car when she didn’t have to be anywhere. Back in those days, I did not understand the glory of a Friday night at home alone in your pajamas by 6pm. I’m glad I could let my mom relish in those nights. Ha!
4. Friday night football games? Usually. Friday night Basketball games? Were those a thing?
I went to a lot of the football games, especially my senior year because there was a cute football player that sat in front of me in English class. Can’t remember his name. We had a good basketball team, but I think the only time I ever went to those games were the Celebrity Basketball Games. When Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Soleil Moon-Frye showed up.
5. What kind of job? Babysitting.
I was the regular babysitter for several families at church. I was raking in the cash.
<What happened to 6?>
Okay, there’s no #6, so I’m going to make one up.
6. Who was your best friend? Candace.
We are still friends to this day. Even though we don’t hang out nearly enough!
7. Were you considered a jock? Nope.
This question makes me laugh so hard. I’ve never been athletic. Although I did find out in college that I’m not terrible at volleyball.
8. Were you in the band? Nope.
Not a band geek at all. I played the flute from 4th to 6th grade, but I hated practicing so I never got very good and quit by the time I got to junior high.
9. Were you a nerd? Nope. I wasn’t cool enough to be a nerd.
It’s true. In my high school, the nerds were actually the group of kids I WANTED to hang out with, but they wouldn’t let me.
10. Do you still live in the same school district? Nope.
I haven’t lived in that town for years. Not since before I moved up to Utah for college.
11. Can you sing the school fight song? Did we have one?
I have vague memories of the activities guy trying to teach us the school song during graduation rehearsal, but none of us ever remembered it. But I have ZERO memory of there ever being a fight song. I might just not have been paying attention.
12. What was your school mascot? Bulldog.
Since we were in the first group to attend the brand new high school, we got to vote on everything from school colors to mascot. The school was going to be called Ayala High School, but they didn’t like my nomination, the Aardvark. I’m still bitter.
13. If you could go back and do it again? Knowing what I know now? Totally. I would rule the school. But just a do over? Not in a million years.
Yeah. You know how this question always comes up? If I could go back with my 40-year-old brain, I totally would because my experience would be completely different. Because OF COURSE IT WOULD. But there is not one single thing about high school I’m keen to repeat. Especially without the benefit of hind sight and maturity.
14. Are you still in contact with people from your high school? Yes.
Thank you, Mark Zuckerberg.
15. Do you know where your high school sweetheart is? Didn’t have one.
I had crushes. So many crushes. But never a high school sweetheart. I sort of kind of had a “boyfriend” for three weeks in the summer between 9th and 10th grade, but then I broke up with him because of a ridiculous rumor I heard that was probably not even true. It would be 8 years before I had another boyfriend. Remember how I wasn’t even cool enough to be a nerd?
16. What was your favorite subject? French.
Mme. Ormsbee was the BEST.
17. Do you still have your High School ring? Yes.
I do still have it, but it sure doesn’t fit.
18. Do you still have your high school yearbook? Yes.
I do have it. But I haven’t even opened it in years.
But here’s my senior picture:
This picture is a little distorted, though. My head isn’t that weirdly shaped. I don’t think.
Wait. Is it? Someone please tell me!
