Chandler and Monica are the real heart and soul of Friends.
They are. You know it’s true.
Everyone’s supposed to be all Ross + Rachel = 4EVER.
I used to be one of those girls.
Don’t get me wrong. I rooted for Ross and Rachel. I wanted those crazy kids to figure things out and get together and live happily ever after. Of course, I totally wanted that for them. And no one cried more than me when she said, “I got off the plane.”
But Ross and Rachel and their tumultuous journey is not the sort of thing that one should aspire to when looking for their perfect relationship. They got jealous of each other. Fought like crazy. When things were hard, they were mean. Sometimes REALLY mean.
And then you look at Chandler and Monica.
They were friends. It started off just like that. With friendship. They knew everything about each other. Had a long history and a lot of shared memories. And then they just kind of fell in love.
Okay, fine, they slept together a few times because they were both lonely and then they realized that they like each other as MORE THAN friends, and then they fell in love.
The point is that from the moment they got together, their story was such a great example of how couples should work. Of what relationships should aspire to be.
They were FUNNY. Oh my gosh, so funny. But also adorable. They teased each other, sure. But always in a loving way. Never to be mean or hurtful.
When they disagreed about things, they talked them through. Yeah, sometimes they fought and took a little time away, but they always talked about it. They didn’t let issues fester.
They stood up for one another. With understanding and compassion and love. Had each other’s backs and supporting each other.
One of my favorite times was when Chandler accidentally accepted a temporary work assignment that would require relocating to Tulsa. When he got home and told Monica about it, she was like, “Sure, I could be a chef in Tulsa…” She wasn’t thrilled, but she would go and pretend to be fine with it because it was for Chandler. And then she got an amazing opportunity that would require her to stay in the city. Chandler told her to take it. Without really even hesitating. And then he basically commuted from New York to Oklahoma every week for awhile.
So, yeah. You can have your Ross and Rachel and all their drama. I do love them too.
But I’d take a love like Chandler and Monica’s ANY day.
(Random fun fact: I’ve taken several “Which FRIEND are you?” quizzes and I’ve always gotten either Chandler or Monica. Maybe this is why I like them so much??
