Happy Tuesday, friends!
Did you know that I am turning FORTY this year??
Seriously, what the hell?
But it’s true. I’m turning FORTY and I’m struggling to comprehend this fact and also trying desperately to figure out what to do with myself now that I’m almost FORTY.
I have tried to do 101 in 1001 lists about a zillion times. Those never work
My good friend Jennee and I hosted Project 52 for several years in a row and I never once completed a list.
But I’ve made a decision.
In 2017, the year I turn FORTY, I’m going to make some new lists. But these are lists that *should* be easier to finish. Because these are just fun, silly, superfluous things. And also things I really want to do.
Movies. Books. Places to go.
See? All things that are right up my alley!
I’m making lists of things I am going to see and read/listen to and and visit.
First up, movies. Have you ever heard of Letterboxd? It’s like the Goodreads of movies. You can make lists of movies you’ve seen. Movies you want to see. Favorite Action Movies that DON’T have explosions. Best Movies About Women Who DON’T Fall in Love at the End. Stuff like that. And you can rate and review movies, get suggestions of things to see, and follow people. And they can follow you. It’s fun.
I just started up a profile, which you are welcome to check out if you want.
My first list over there is a list of 40 movies I want to see this year that I have never seen before. Among the titles are five Best Picture winners from my lifetime. Every Best Picture nominee since 2000 (except Precious because I just can’t). And a bunch of classics that I simply can’t explain.
Here are the 40 films I plan to see this year:
- 12 Angry Men
- All About Eve
- Black Swan
- Boogie Nights
- Chariots of Fire
- The Deer Hunter
- Ed Wood
- Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
- The French Connection
- Gangs of New York
- The Godfather (yes, really)
- Gosford Park
- The Hours
- The Hustler
- The Imitation Game
- In the Bedroom
- The Last Emperor
- The Maltese Falcon
- Out of Africa
- The Portrait of a Lady
- Postcards from the Edge
- The Reader
- A Room with a View
- A Separation
- A Serious Man
- Sunset Boulevard
- The Theory of Everything
- The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
- War Horse
- Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
I know. Some of these..there’s simply no explanation for why I haven’t seen them yet.
Luckily, I can get through pretty much all of these with the help of Netflix and Amazon.
There are also a number of books I want to read. I did, in fact, set a specific target on Goodreads. And that target is…you’ve guessed it: 40.
Now, I’m not going to make a list of 40 specific books I’ll be reading this year because I really don’t want to lock myself in that way. I feel like movies are less of a commitment than books, you know?
But here are 10 books I definitely want to read or listen to this year:
- Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, John Tiffany, Jack Thorne & JK Rowling
- The Princess Diarist, Carrie Fisher
- A Passage to India, EM Forster
- 11/22/63, Stephen King
- Slumdog Millionaire, Vikas Swarup
- A Dance with Dragons, George R R Martin
- Scrappy Little Nobody, Anna Kendrick
- Settle for More, Megyn Kelly
- Atonement, Ian McEwan
- The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo
And guess what! If you sign up for a trial of Audible right now, you get two free audiobooks.
And then there’s the travel. I want to do a LOT of traveling this year. More than I have mentioned. But I’m still not quite ready to talk about all my plans just yet.
Of course, I have a list for that too.
Here are 10 places I’d like to see this year:
- The Taj Mahal
- Mount Everest
- Buddha’s Birthplace
- Disney World
- Kennedy Space Center
- Wizarding World of Harry Potter
- Tempe Diablo Stadium
- Secret Location #1
- Secret Location #2
(Sorry for the secrets, but I’m not ready to dish quite yet!)
So…that’s a peek at how my year is going to go.
