I know I mentioned this last month, but October is when a lot of award season movies really start to hit theaters. And there are some really exciting releases coming out this month, including a few you might already have on your Must See list. Check these out…
The Birth of a Nation
This highly anticipated Nate Parker film scored the biggest distribution deal in the history of the Sundance Film Festival. And it looks good. Except that early reviews are saying that it turned out to be not that great. Which is too bad because the excuse will be that the movie flopped due to Nate Parker’s rape scandal, instead of the merits of the film itself (or lack thereof). But I’m keeping it here because it could be received by audiences differently than critics.
Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life
I’m very definitely not in the target demographic for this movie, so I won’t comment. Some of you might want to take your kids to see it, though.
The Girl on the Train
Yes! I’ve been waiting for this movie for over a year and it’s finally coming out this week! I’m hearing good things about Emily Blunt’s performance, although the overall movie might not be as amazing as I want it to be. But I’m still going to be first in line to see it. (Not really, but as close as possible.)
I tried to get tickets to see this at the LA Film Festival a few months ago. It looks really interesting, has a great cast, and is by the guys that gave us Gravity. What’s not to like?
I really want this to be good. Ben Affleck working for dangerous criminal organizations? JK Simmons? Heck yes. Fingers crossed that Anna Kendrick’s adorableness doesn’t distract from the thriller-suspense aspect of this movie.
I love movies that feature strong female characters and this looks good, even though Kristen Stewart is one of the stars. It turns out she’s actually not terrible. But Michelle Williams and Laura Dern also star and they’re both amazing. Plus it’s a female-centric film directed by a woman, Kelly Reichardt. And I’ve heard good things already.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
GIVE ME ALL THE TOM CRUISE MOVIES! Plus, this just looks like so much fun, as usual.
The Whole Truth
It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Keanu Reeves. Or Renee Zellweger, for that matter. Other than the hint of Bridget Jones that graced movie theaters for about 13.4 seconds. Anyway, this looks potentially interesting. And it’s kind of intriguing to see Jim Belushi in a non-comedy role.
Keeping Up With the Joneses
Please be funny. PLEASE be funny.
Ouija: Origin of Evil
Not for me because Ouija boards actually freak me out. I know. Even though I like horror movies. But some people are into it.
Ewan McGregor makes his directorial debut! Yay! And there is a LOT of early buzz about this movie. People are talking Oscars and stuff. It has a great cast, with McGregor, Jennifer Connelly, Dakota Fanning… It looks intense and sad and beautiful and heartbreaking and I hope it lives up to the hype.
I have a love-hate relationship with these Dan Brown/Tom Hanks/Ron Howard projects. The books by Dan Brown are interesting but just okay. The movies are about the same, but somehow still fun. Inferno is actually my favorite of Dan Brown’s novels, so I’m hoping this movie at least is decent. We’ll see.
