Guess what? Guess what, guess what, guess what??
It’s that time again!
It’s time to take a look at this summer’s biggest releases with:
Karen’s Awesome Guide to this Summer’s Movies!
27: Alice Through the Looking Glass
27: X-Men: Apocalypse
Okay, so I already saw Alice Through the Looking Glass and…eh…There were some things about it that I enjoyed and some things about it that I REALLY didn’t. At all. In fact, I feel a whole ranty post coming about one particular element that really ticked me off. I haven’t seen X-Men: Apocalypse yet and, to be honest, I don’t know if I really even want to. I’m kinda over the X-Men.
3: Me Before You
3: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
3: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
Frankly, I’m not all that interested in any of these. I’m going to a screening of TMNT next week and I’m sure it won’t be terrible, but I loved the Ninja Turtles when I was a kid and I just…don’t…love Megan Fox. Or Michael Bay. And Me Before You…Maybe I’d feel differently if I read the book but it looks like any other sappy faux-mance story about a girl who doesn’t have her life together falling in love with a guy that she never could have otherwise met except for Fate and oh yeah the guy is in a wheelchair and has this whole tragic backstory and WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THEM?? Yeah…I don’t really care…
10: Now You See Me 2
10: The Conjuring 2
I am SO EXCITED to see The Conjuring 2! Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren, ghosthunters/ demonologists that investigated some of the scariest stories in the world back in the 70s and 80s. And this story from London about the Enfield Poltergeist looks seriously freaky. Plus, it’s Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga and I have major crushes on both of them.
Warcraft holds no interest for me, but I do like the cast. And Now You See Me 2 will probably be pretty good if it lives up to what I heard about the first one, but I never saw it, so I’m not going to rush out to see the sequel. But Genius looks so good. Not your typical summertime movie, but maybe I nice brainy film to watch when you’re tired of explosions?
17: Finding Dory
Um…yes, please. Can’t wait!
24: Independence Day: Resurgence
I almost feel obligated to watch this sequel 20 years after the original with most of the original cast. (Um, Will Smith? Hello?) It looks all right, but not that exciting. I don’t know. I’m definitely going to see it, I just don’t expect a whole lot.
29: The Shallows
This movie looks seriously creepy. Not exactly Jaws, but intense. We’ll see about this one…
1: The BFG
1: The Legend of Tarzan
I’ve never loved Tarzan, but it looks pretty cool, and it’s interesting to see what happened to him after he left the jungle, rather than another retelling of his life there. And The BFG just looks like so much fun. I’m REALLY looking forward to that one. There’s always something special about the movies Spielberg directs himself.
8: The Secret Life of Pets
8: Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Cell looks ridiculous and cheesy, but it’s based on a Stephen King book, so it’s got to at least be fun. Plus, it reunites John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, so it can’t be all bad. The Secret Life of Pets looks pretty funny and adorable. Chris’s daughter really wants to see it, so I’ll hopefully make that happen. And Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates looks like the kind of raunchy comedy I usually avoid, but it looks hilarious, so who knows?
13: The Infiltrator
Bryan Cranston can do no wrong. I’ll definitely be seeing this crime thriller. I mean, besides Walter White, the cast includes Diane Kruger, John Leguizamo, Benjamin Bratt, Olympia Dukakis…Yes, yes, yes.
It might be terrible, but you know what? It might be great. I gotta support these ladies!
22: Star Trek Beyond
22: Lights Out
We’re two for two with how great these Star Trek reboots have been. With a new director, though…I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes. But it does look super good, so I still have high hopes. I may not be able to handle the scares of Lights Out, but I’m curious enough about it that I might just go see what I’m made of. Although I have a hard enough time watching the trailer, so…
29: Jason Bourne
I mean, Matt Damon is back! Yay! I love his Bourne character and I’m really excited for more. Doesn’t this look so good?
5: Suicide Squad
5: Nine Lives
Eh..Suicide Squad is another movie I feel obligated to watch. I’m sure it’ll be fine since it’s a DC movie that Zach Snyder didn’t fiddle around with. And I like the cast. But I’m just not really into DC characters. Except Batman. I’ll always love Batman. But I guess seeing a movie from the perspective of the villains is a fun concept. So we’ll see. Nine Lives looks really dumb, but it could just be dumb enough to work. Maybe. We’ll see. Kevin Spacey and Christopher Walken together? What could go wrong?
12: Pete’s Dragon
12: Florence Foster Jenkins
Pete’s Dragon looks like it’ll be beautiful and sweet. I’m sure it’ll be good. Even the Disney movies that don’t work are rarely actually bad. Florence Foster Jenkins looks fun and funny and oh so good and honestly, when does Meryl Streep do anything terrible? Congratulations, Ms. Streep, on your soon-to-be TWENTIETH Oscar nomination.
19: The Space Between Us
19: War Dogs
You know we’re getting to the end of the summer when the pickins get slim. Neither of these look particularly good. Collide is an adventure-thriller type that will probably be pretty standard and formulaic and nothing special. Ben-Hur is a totally unnecessary remake. But maybe it’ll look cool in IMAX. The Space Between Us is potentially interesting. I don’t expect much, but it could be surprising. War Dogs could be good. Jonah Hill and Miles Teller seem like a fun match up and an underdog story that involves the US government is always intriguing.
26: Don’t Breathe
Another creepy thriller type movie. Plus it has the girl from Suburgatory (Jane Levy) and she’s pretty awesome. It looks like kind of a twist on the Audrey Hepburn classic Wait Until Dark, but, this time, who is the bad guy?
All right…so there you have it. Obviously, there are a bunch of other movies that are coming out too, and some that aren’t really on the radar yet, but this is a pretty good look at what will be coming out between now and the end of August. Anything you’re particularly excited about??
