Happy Friday, friends!
I’ve been a contributor to the Awards Circuit entertainment site for a couple of years now. I haven’t been as involved over there as I would like to be, but that is 100% my fault. But I HAVE gotten to go to some film festivals and things as a result of my affiliation with this really great site.
One thing they do is host a weekly podcast called the Awards Circuit Power Hour. It’s a lot of fun to listen to, and I even got to be a guest on it one time when they recorded the 100th episode.
When I first started writing for the Awards Circuit, one of the columns I was assigned to work on was called Women in Cinema. It’s kind of funny because, prior to that assignment, I had never given a ton of thought to the underrepresentation of women in Hollywood. But over the past two plus years, I’ve been keenly aware of this issue.
And then the nominations were announced last month for the 88th Academy Awards and that #OscarsSoWhite hashtag that popped up last year started trending again almost immediately when it became clear very fast that women and minorities had, as usual, been basically forgotten in the conversation, despite there being a number of eligible and worthy contenders.
So then I was contacted by one of my fellow Awards Circuit writers, Kristen Lopez, who said they had been working on putting together a spin off podcast that would focus on bringing attention to the women and people of color in Hollywood and the girl who was originally supposed to be one of the participants had dropped out and would I be interested?
Would I?? Heck yes, I would!
We recorded our inaugural episode a few days ago and it just went live yesterday. And, well, I think it’s pretty darned good. If you just ignore the fact that I say “you know” approximately 178 times in the space of 40 minutes.
So, this week’s episode is basically an introduction, but we also get into the #OscarsSoWhite issue, the planned boycott and more. From here on out, we’ll also be discussing a film each week, there will be trivia and games and so much more. It’s going to be awesome.
