Today was the first morning in YEARS that I have slept through the Oscar nominations. It was so strange. I don’t know how it happened and I had every intention of getting up to watch them, but then I…missed it.
So when I turned on the news, I expected them to be talking about the nominated films and sharing who made the cut.
I was NOT expecting to learn that one of the finest actors working today would be gone. Suddenly. Without any warning.
The first time I ever saw Alan Rickman onscreen was in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves when I was in high school. I really liked Kevin Costner, but I just fell in love with Alan Rickman.
Not long after Robin Hood, my mom and I rented a little British rom com called Truly Madly Deeply. I didn’t like it but my mom loved it and I’ve thought a few times in recent years that I should revisit it now that I’ve lived a little and learned more about love and what it is and what it does to you.
At some point I saw Die Hard, and later fell in love all over again when he took on the role of Professor Snape. I loved him in Galaxy Quest and Dogma and Sense & Sensibility and Love Actually.
Celebrities die all the time. Sometimes it’s expected and sometimes not so much, and sometimes we cry and other times we shrug and wish they’d been able to clean up their lives. But this one? This one hurts a little bit extra.
Here’s a clip that sealed the deal on me being an Alan Rickman fan for life. Enjoy.
