I’m sorry about last week. I just figured with the holiday and all that no one was really thinking about goals and updates and all that, so it seemed like a good excuse reason to take a week off.
Also, I’m posting this on Sunday night because tomorrow I’m participating in another of the infamous Alex J. Cavanaugh‘s blog fests.
I looked at my list the other day and felt overwhelmed. Fifty-two goals? That’s a lot of projects. Some are easy, of course, and some are more challenging. But I had that overwhelming feeling that I cannot possibly finish everything on my list in the next 6 1/2 months. It’s just not possible.
And then I stopped looking at the complete list and started looking at individual goals.
#5–Read the Chronicles of Narnia. I’ve stalled progress on my current book. Maybe it’s time to switch it up with something else and go back to that one later. And traveling through the wardrobe into Narnia sounds like a good break.
#16–Attend a city council meeting? That’s not so hard. I just need to find out when they are (Tuesdays) and pick a week to go. Easy.
#35–Travel somewhere by boat. I left it vague intentionally. A trip to Catalina, perhaps?
#48–Travel to a state I haven’t visited before. That one is trickier, but I’m working on it.
I mean, really, when I take them one by one, this list isn’t hard. The problem comes from looking at the entire list as one giant project. That’s daunting.
So if you’re at the point where you just feel like you haven’t gotten anywhere and you still have far too much to do and you’ll never possibly finish by December, just relax. Take a breath, and look at a few of your individual goals. Make a plan for each one. Decide when you’ll do it and what it’s going to look like.
Don’t let yourself get caught up in All 52 (or whatever your number) goals at once. Because you’ll get frustrated and give up altogether. And it’s much better to finish 10 or 5 or even 1 goal than not to finish any.
